Tornado Strikes Aiken County
Red Cross Provides Immediate Assistance
On the night of April 11th an F-3 tornado ripped through parts of Aiken County devastating scores of our neighbors. Some lost everything; others suffered severe damage to their homes and property. There were injuries and one death.

The Aiken County Chapter of the American Red Cross immediately mobilized to deliver water and food for those affected and for first responders. At first light on Saturday, April 12th, Red Cross Damage Assessment Teams fanned out to assess the extent of damage. A shelter was set up to comfort those who had no place to go. For many days, the Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicle, manned by dedicated volunteers, rolled through the streets of Beech Island, New Ellenton and the Silver Bluff area providing water and food to those who couldnt leave. More than 1500 meals and snacks were distributed in the days following the tornado strike. Additionally, the Red Cross provided 60 tarps to residents needing to cover their damaged roofs.

Now the Red Cross is reaching out to further help the families whose homes were destroyed or received major damage by providing clean-up kits and disaster assistance to meet verified, disaster-caused needs.
